  Stanza VI
23 Ante ficaron tan sãos | ben como quand' i entraran CSM 364:23After this line there is a gap in [E] corresponding in size to the rest of this single stanza, and since none of the other manuscripts has this cantiga, it is not possible to know what the text might have been. Fortunately, however, the gap seems to be after the narrative climax, and the stanzas immediately before and after this one are not left with incomplete sentences, so it would seem to be an entirely reasonable performance choice here to just omit the incomplete stanza altogether. The final stanza is quite sufficient in itself to wrap up the tale. 7' | 7'

Footnotes

Line 15:

The compressed syllable of the word triinta with synaeresis falls on an ascending plica .bod, preserving the natural hiatus. Modern Portuguese and Galician have trinta with two syllables.

Line 19:

See CSM 271:39, CSM 305:13 and CSM 308:37 for attested cases of elision in the word serviço.

Line 23:

After this line there is a gap in [E] corresponding in size to the rest of this single stanza, and since none of the other manuscripts has this cantiga, it is not possible to know what the text might have been.

Links to the Oxford database are provided with the kind permission of the project team. When planning a concert or recording, I would recommend that you use (and credit) my more pragmatic texts and supporting materials in the preparation of your performance, but that you request permission from the Oxford database team to reproduce (and credit) their own critically edited texts in your programme or liner notes, as these adhere to stricter criteria that keep them closer to the original sources, and undoubtedly have the greater academic authority.

Average syllables / min. Time
Very slow5013:07
Slow1006:33
Medium1504:22
Fast2003:16
Very fast2502:37

These are very approximate total times for a full sung (or spoken) performance of all stanzas with all repeats of the refrain. Note that the speed is in average syllables per minute, and no particular mensural interpretation is assumed. More ornamented music will reduce the syllabic speed considerably. Remember also to add time for instrumental preludes, interludes and postludes.
